Word count available in Sandbox? Questions about draft for existing article

We are working on a Linguistics Project and our draft/page has to be 1,000 words. I am very confused about how to format it within the sandbox and also print the draft out for peer review; I've asked my teacher and fellow students about this, but I'm still extremely unsure. I am editing and adding to an existing article, so do I copy the entire article into my Sandbox and just make edits and notate them each time I change something in the edit summary ? My worry is that even if I know that I have around 1,000 words total, how will my professor be able to see that, apart from comparing my draft to the existing article or going back and forth through my edit history?
