Can I insert an image of a book cover?

asked 2017-03-29 17:22:51 -0600

I am working on an article through WikiEdu and want to insert the cover of a book that relates to my article. I wasn't able to find it on the Wikimedia search tool or on Creative Commons. Just wondering if there is a restriction on book covers.

Hi! You can absolutely add a book cover to Wikipedia!

The main thing that you will need to do is make sure that when you upload a file via the File Upload Wizard that you select "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use.", that you specify the article it will be used in, and that you then select "This is the official cover art of a work."

This will show up once you select that it is fair use. It'll ask you who the author is - I usually put down the book's author and the publisher. Make sure that you put down where you took the item from. If you took a picture of a book yourself, write down that you took the picture. If it's a website, link to the website.
