Ask Your Question

How do I address my students' questions regarding why the content that they're adding is deleted when all they're doing is translating articles from original language to English?

Students are not only translating but adding hyperlinks and new references to support the information in the translation.

It's difficult to answer this without knowing the specific examples.

  1. Deletion isn't perfect. Sometimes articles are deleted mistakenly. Always talk to the deleting admin, try to understand what went wrong (you can find the deleting admin's name in the red box that appears on the deleted page).
  2. Newly-created articles are sometimes nominated for deletion because they are moved into mainspace prematurely. This is one of the reasons that we strongly recommend that students draft their work in sandboxes and make sure that it has reached a fairly high standard before it is moved to mainspace. The Editing Wikipedia brochure has a checklist on page 15 that should be reviewed before students move their content to mainspace.
  3. Standards for inclusion may vary from one language version of Wikipedia to another. Sourcing standards have also changed over the years. Sometimes an article has persisted simply because no one cared enough to nominate it for deletion. Even if you're just translating an article, the onus is still on you to ensure that it is is supported by at least two or three high-quality reliable sources.

I found the teacher that posted the comments, but I don't see offhand where the students' work has been deleted - but there are a lot of students to check, so I'm going to post a question on their userpage.
