Does the tag on a WikiProject mean that the article has already been claimed? Does it mean that I can't edit it for a class?

WikiProjects tag articles that fall within a broad area of knowledge that's of interest to the members of the WikiProject. This doesn't mean that the article has been claimed, or that it somehow belongs to the WikiProject. In fact, no one can claim ownership of an article on Wikipedia.

Rather than being a barrier to contribution, WikiProjects can serve as resource. Many WikiProjects have resources to help editors in that subject area, like subject-specific style guides. Few are very active, but active ones can put you in touch with other Wikipedians who are also interested in the topic area.
