VisualEditor doesn't format my references properly

asked 2015-10-29 16:16:22 -0600

When I paste the url of my reference in the cite tool on VisualEditor, it creates a reference, but it isn't the right one. Instead of the usual "Author's name, Article title, Journal" format it just says "My University Library, My University". The link works for me, but other people on Wikipedia tell me the link doesn't work either.

The url that you are pasting into the cite tool probably goes through your library's proxy server (it has a format like ebscohost.com.myuniversity.edu). These links only work for people who are connected through your university - it doesn't work for everyone else (including the cite tool).

The best solution is to use the article's DOI. If you are using JSTOR, you can also use the article's stable url. If that isn't available, you may have to enter the details of the reference manually.
