As the instructor, you can decide whether or not to have your students choose the articles they will work on for their Wikipedia assignment. Choosing their own articles can be highly satisfying, but daunting to students. If you allow your students to choose their own articles, you'll want to approve their choices to ensure that they meet Wikipedia's notability requirements, and that they are relevant to your course. In either case, the content expert assigned to your course can direct both you and your students in the selection of articles.
