Most classes can complete some type of Wikipedia assignment. The type of Wikipedia project you design will depend on the size, level, and subject of your course. We recommend that classes with more than 50 students, and introductory courses, engage in smaller assignments. This can include, for example, copy-editing and/or critiquing articles.

Adding substantial material to Wikipedia by expanding or creating articles is better for smaller, upper-level courses. Courses exploring controversial topics, or studying medical/psychological fields, should be aware that these subject areas are challenging to edit on Wikipedia. We recommend that these classes have fewer than 35 students, and that those are upper-division students.

Our assignment design tool will help you create the Wikipedia assignment that best meets the needs of your course.
