Wikipedia limits the number of accounts registered from a single IP address per day. Your computer lab or the WiFi network at your school may funnel your entire class through a small number of IP addresses, so if everyone attempts to register on the same day, you could trigger the limit.

If this happens, you can do one of two things:

  • Register your account from a different location. Working from home, over a cellular connection or a coffee shop will likely work, since the IP address will be different than the rate limited address.
  • Register your account on a different Wikimedia project. All Wikimedia project accounts are linked, so your account registered on the English Wikipedia is the same account you'll use for Wikimedia Commons or WikiNews. To register your account from Wikimedia Commons, follow this link.

Note: It appears that the second option no longer works.

Your second suggestion doesn't actually work. My students just tried registering for their accounts using the alternative Wikimedia sites, and they still encountered the same issue. Is it possible to create an exception to the limitation for school IP addresses participating in Wikiedu?
