Templates are strings of wiki code that have special functions for pages. They have a wide variety of uses, from laying out navigation boxes to displaying references. Nearly every page you visit on Wikipedia will have more than one template on it, most of which include or use other templates in their own code. If you are looking for how to modify a template on an article, see this answer.

Templates are not like pages. A single template may be used on thousands of pages (many are used more heavily, but editing those is restricted to administrators), so the changes you make could impact a lot of editors and readers very quickly. As such, most regular editors of Wikipedia will only rarely edit templates. If you are interested in creating a new template or editing an existing one, you will want to read the help page first to understand how templates on Wikipedia work.

After reviewing the help page, you can test out your changes in the template's sandbox, listed at the bottom of the documentation on the template page itself. The sandbox for the Infobox template allows for edits to be tested out without impacting the millions of pages depending on that template.
