Adding your e-mail address to your Wikipedia account is a good idea, as it means that you can get important notifications and retrieve your password if you forget it. You can add your email by entering it when you sign up for an account or you can add it later.

If you're adding it prior to signup, you need to go to your preferences section. You can access this via the information bar at the top right hand portion of every Wikipedia page. (You must be logged in, however.) In your user profile section (this will automatically open to this page) you need to scroll down to the bottom of the page, where the e-mail section is located:

While I have already submitted an email, there will be a place here for you to enter your e-mail. After entering your email and saving your progress, you will want to select the box that allows users to email you. Don't worry - your email will not be visible on Wikipedia and it's many members that have this selected receive only a few emails a year. You won't be spammed. In order to activate this you will have to confirm your email address - all this does is send you an email. Click the link in the email and you're done - the email is confirmed!
