Editing in source code can be intimidating at first, but it gets easier once you get used to it. Wikipedia has a cheatsheet that lists the most common markup language and is an invaluable resource for even seasoned Wikipedia editors, but especially newbies.

I personally recommend using VisualEditor, as this is an easier way to get around the markup language. It's my chosen editing format, especially as it allows you to see a general overview of what the article will look like once you save the page.
