Revision history [back]

Instructors love teaching with Wikipedia. In our last instructor survey, 92% of respondents said they would teach with Wikipedia again. Here are some of the common reasons we hear about enjoying their experiences:

  • Students get a chance to make a real difference with their coursework. Their education gives back to the community, and instructors see a noticeable shift in students' motivation.
  • The collaborative nature of a wiki as well as the iterative process of this writing assignment force students to think about how others see their work. It helps them really learn and improve their communication styles.
  • Students are proud of their achievements and share their articles with friends and family.
  • Students learn the ins and outs of the topic they are researching, especially when others challenge the content they have included or left out.
  • This assignment opens a discussion about plagiarism and copyright that otherwise gets brushed over in a school Honor Code.
  • Article layouts help students understand the importance of parallel structure and organization in their writing.
  • Wiki Ed helps instructors explore a new assignment without totally reinventing the wheel.
  • Wikipedia gives students a chance to develop scholarship that actually gets published and reaches thousands of readers.
