Wikipedia's "Did You Know?" (DYK) feature promotes new and expanded articles on the main page of Wikipedia, offering potentially thousands of page views, exposing an article to readers and your fellow editors.

Students can nominate their work for DYK if it is a new article, or a dramatic expansion of an existing article (five times what it was before the student began working). Because this feature focuses on newly improved articles, students must nominate their work within 7 days of adding/expanding their article.

The process is described in our DYK Handout. Briefly:

  • Check to see if the article meets the DYK criteria. It should be at least 1,500 characters of prose--excluding lists like filmographies or tables and templates. Expanded articles also only count the prose when computing the expansion. These criteria are sometimes hard to judge and editors have created JavaScript gadgets to help check. Ask the content expert for your course to help you check the criteria, it will only take them a moment to do so.
  • Write a "hook", or a short sentence (the limit is 200 characters, but fitting it into the length of a tweet is a good approximation) describing an interesting fact about the subject. This fact must be cited to a source with an inline citation.
  • Propose your hook on the nomination page. It's good to have a second hook in mind or proposed on the page as well, in case there is a problem with the first hook.

This all sounds like a lot of work, but it's really quite easy. Once you've written an article, the hard part is out of the way!
