I was wondering, what types of images or photos can I use for my article? I know that copyrighted images are not allowed, but are there any other limitations?

Trying to find a good image for an article can sometimes seem like it's a difficult task, but it doesn't have to be. Copyrighted images should not be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, however they can be used in articles about books, films, or music, where the work's cover artwork would be helpful in identifying the work in question. Wiki Education has an excellent handout on how and what to upload content to the Commons.

As for what's appropriate to add to an article, Wikipedia has a section about this very topic, but I will go into a few important examples.

You should only add images that directly pertain to an article. For example, it would be appropriate to add an image of a Spanish person to the article about Spanish people, while an image of a grocery store in Spain would most likely not make any sense. It may seem obvious to me that grocery stores are important to the health and economy of Spanish citizens, but it doesn't really add anything to an article about people.

You should also avoid adding images that don't seem overly necessary or would not add anything to an article. Avoid adding redundant images, especially if there are already high quality similar images in the article that would be more helpful. The only exception to this would be if you had images that showed a different aspect or version of the topic, as in the case of the painting the Mona Lisa, where there are closeups of specific details and of other important, similar paintings.

Wikipedia is not censored, so you can use images that would seem shocking or obscene to other people. In this situation please be cautious, as these images should only be used if it would make the article more informative and would be appropriate. When using these types of images it's a good idea to first ask your Content Expert if the image should be added.
