Sponsoring institutions are asked to specify topic areas they'd like a Scholar to improve on Wikipedia. These are typically based on the library's strengths, but can be tied to a sponsoring department, institutional mission, etc. The application asks Scholars for their own interest and experience with those subjects. Scholars are relied upon to use their experience to identify opportunities for article creation and improvement, but sometimes institutions help to identify project articles, too.

In selecting articles, it is important to keep in mind that the Scholar cannot promote the university or its financial interests.
